Online Songwriting and Recording Class! $150
with John Ross, Ages 12 and Up
Four weeks in August
Thursdays, August 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th, 5-6pm
Learn to write, record, and produce your own ideas at home, using minimal gear!
Hosted by touring singer/songwriter and film and television composer, John Ross, this class is perfect for the beginner songwriter who wants to develop original ideas and start making their own demos independently.
John will start with the concept of working in a “key” and how to write a chord progression, adding a new layer each week from harmony, to rhythm, to melody, and finish with a lesson on how to EQ and mix your final product.
Students will be proud to have a recording of their own original song by the last class.
All you need to get started with this class is a laptop or desktop computer with GarageBand, a USB condenser microphone or audio interface, and a pair of headphones. Gear requirements and recommendations are provided below.
No experience necessary, but must play a songwriting instrument, such as guitar, piano, or ukulele.
To take this class, you will need a laptop or desktop computer with Garageband. To be able to record instruments and vocals into your computer, you will need a USB microphone or audio interface. If you have a newer Mac that doesn't have a USB port, you can order a USB to C-port adapter on Amazon to make it compatible.
An audio interface is a more professional quality piece of equipment, but it is more expensive. We recommend the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. If you already have a microphone and headphones, they are available at around $159. If you need a microphone, headphones, and cables, studio packages are offered at around $269. You will also need a boom microphone stand to adjust where to place the microphone.
If you need a cheaper option, a USB microphone can be plugged directly into the USB port of your laptop. You will still need a pair of headphones, but most USB mics can be set on a desk and won't require a microphone stand. USB microphones start at around $50 and up. Newer Macs do not have a USB port. If you have a C Port, remember that you will need a USB to C Port adapter to make it compatible.
Below are some recommendations. If you have questions, Email us at email@example.com.
There are numerous options for USB microphones. If you'd like to price shop and compare, follow this link for more choices. https://musiccritic.com/equipment/microphones/best-usb-condenser-mics/
