Workshops are an effective way for a group of students to learn. They are vehicles to work on a musical concept with creative input and contributions from others. The teacher will plan the workshop and focus on a theme, with a goal, and moderates classes. Workshops can be individual events or a series of sessions. Read about our upcoming workshops below.

World Rhythm Workshop For Adults!

Adult class January 31st and February 7th! 6-8pm!
In this two week workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of popular world music rhythms from Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Turkey and Northern India. The unique rhythm patterns will be analyzed and explored, and students will have the opportunity to play and improvise upon them in a drum circle setting. These same rhythms will be applied to the drum set.
Afro-Cuban Rhythms: The Martillo, Tumbao, Guaguanco, and the Clave.
Brazilian Rhythms: Bossa Nova
Jamaican Rhythms: Reggae, Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggaeton
Turkish Rhythms: Maqsum, Malfuf, Balladi, and Shifateli
Indian Rhythms: Teental, Jhaptal, and Rupak Tal
The school will provide all percussion instruments, including congas, tablas, dumbek (darbuka), bongos, shakers, cowbells, tambourines, wood blocks, and drum set. This workshop is not only for drummers, but musicians who have studied other instruments as well. It is open to anyone who wants to learn and explore the sounds, drums, and rhythms from these regions. Beginners are welcome.
About the teacher:
Alan Silverman specializes in Rock, Jazz, Funk, Latin, Hip Hop and Pop drumming styles and has a Jazz Performance degree from SUNY New Paltz. Aside from the drum set, he has studied Afro-Cuban and Indian hand percussion and teaches the tablas and the congas.

Monday Night Songwriting Meet-up for Kids and Teens

1st and 3rd Mondays: Teen Songwriting Meet-Up, 5:45-7pm, $27 per person
2nd Mondays: Elementary Age Kid’s Songwriting Meet-Up: 5:45-6:45pm, $25 per person
A monthly meet-up for kids, teens, and adults, interested in learning songwriting basics through individual and group exercises. This class is a fun outlet for creativity and is ideal for networking with other students with mutual interests. Open to all instruments, all ages, and all levels. Drop-ins are welcome.

About the teacher:
Lisa Markley began her lifetime obsession with song over 50 years ago. She earned her degree in Music Composition from the renowned University of North Texas School of Music, where she also studied vocal jazz, and music education. Lisa has released eleven albums, five of which were released on the Soona Songs record label where she is proud to be a member of their artist roster.
Lisa has recently relocated from Texas to the Hudson Valley, where she continues to write, perform, and teach (beginning voice, jazz voice, improvisation, music theory, composition/arranging, guitar, piano, and sometimes even trombone).
