Online Songwriting and Recording Class
Thursdays October 8-29, 5-6pm
Learn to write, record, and produce your own ideas at home, using minimal gear!
A demo is a great way to explore creativity and get your finished product heard. Live recordings can be great, but learning how to use DAW software, sort out arrangements, and multi-track instruments will help your musicianship prosper.
All you need to get started with this class is a laptop or desktop computer with GarageBand, a USB condenser microphone or interface, and a pair of headphones. Gear recommendations are provided below.
Hosted by touring singer/songwriter and film and television composer, John Ross, this class is perfect for the beginner songwriter who wants to develop original ideas and start making their own demos independently.
John will start with the concept of working in a “key” and how to write a chord progression, adding a new layer each week from harmony, to rhythm, to melody, and finish with a lesson on how to EQ and mix your final product.
Students will be proud to have a recording of their own original song by the last class.
No experience necessary, but must play a songwriting instrument, such as guitar, piano, or ukulele.
Classes will take place online via Zoom Thursdays October 8-29, 5-6pm.
What you will need for this class:
- A Mac laptop, desktop, or iPad with GarageBand
- An audio interface or USB condenser microphone (options explained below)
- Pair of headphones
Home computer recording can be done using minimal gear. Mac laptops, desktops, and iPads all come with GarageBand software for free. However, you will need a way to record the audio into your device. This can be done inexpensively with a USB condenser microphone or more professionally with an audio interface.
*The school has one Samson Satellite microphone that can be borrowed by a student in need for the class.
Below are some inexpensive options to explore to get you recording audio into your computer or iPad. If you have any questions, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
