Welcome to Rhinebeck School of Music's Music Theory Primer Course! With a monthly subscription, you will have access to 32 main music theory tutorials, covering foundational concepts that will build in each subsequent lesson. Each video lesson contains a bulk of content that is broken down later into smaller sections with quizzes and PDF downloads to help you retain what you are learning.
The main goal of this course is to teach you practical music theory that can be applied to any instrument. All examples will be demonstrated on the guitar. If you play another instrument, you may need to download a copy of your instrument’s fretboard or keyboard notes to follow along.
By the end of this course you will have learned:
- The musical alphabet, including sharps and flats.
- How to count and practice intervals.
- How to construct major, minor, and pentatonic scales.
- How to construct diatonic triads and seventh chords.
- Keys and key signatures.
- How to use the circle of fifths and unlock shortcuts.
- Relative scales.
- Practical Theory Application
Practice examples will be represented in both standard notation and Tablature form, so the ability to read music will not be a barrier to learning the information. This course is intended to be thorough and methodical, but should be taken at your own pace.
